shot men and melting women

Fri Sep 16, 2005, 5:10 PM
A few years back, walking to work. Breezy. The morning sun filtered through the gaps between buildings. Minding my own business. I turn to my left and a man approaches another man and shoots him through the neck. There is no action movie slo-mo, just the victim, sort of in a pirouette, a dying top, crumpling to the gutter. I force myself to walk away. The brazen shooter, walks casually, getting a taxi at the corner. Another woman, who was next to the killer when all this happened, still had her hands up, covering her ears, mouth wide open as if trying to scream. I thought she was melting.

That is horrible... but that much is obvious. Last year while visiting an aquaitence I was standing right next to a young boy who was shot several times by a drive by shooter. Since the shooter pulled away immediately I stayed with him ... there really is nothing quite like that is there? Gang violence is too common here, I'm supposedly living in the safest city in the U.S. I would think it is worse seeing a lone man because it's more difficult to say "it was a crime of passion" or "they were just young and stupid" this sounded very calculated. Makes me sad to hear...:(

I'm sorry you'd witnessed something that tragic. At least you know how it feels to be so near violence and instanteneous death. I do not forget. I think that is why I decided to write this very short recollection.

In a third world country where I live there is a lot of this. It's really more of an assasination. In his mind, the killer was just doing his job. That to me is the most horrible thing of it all. That there exist men who have eroded far enough to detach their conscience from their will. Stay safe.
